Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Petronio is widely regarded as one of the leading dance makers of his generation New music, visual art and fashion collide in his dances producing powerfully modern landscapes for the senses. He  has built a body of work with some of the most talented and provocative artists in the world including composers Fischerspooner, Rufus Wainwright, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Antony, James Lavelle, Michael Nyman, Sheila Chandra, Diamanda Galás, Andy Teirstein, Wire, Peter Gordon, Lenny Pickett and David Linton; visual artists Cindy Sherman, Anish Kapoor, Donald Baechler, Stephen Hannock, Tal Yarden, Arnaldo Ferrara, and Justin Terzi III; fashion designers Benjamin Cho, Michael Angel, Tony Cohen, Rachel Roy, Tara Subkoff /Imitation of Christ, Tanya Sarne/Ghost, Leigh Bowery, Paul Compitus, Manolo, Yonson Pak and H. Petal; and Resident Lighting Designer Ken Tabachnick.

Founded in 1984, Stephen Petronio Company has performed in 26 countries throughout the world including the presentation of over 35 New York City engagements. The Company has been commissioned by Dance Umbrella Festival/London, Hebbel Theater/Berlin, Internationales TanzFestival NRW/Germany, Theater Scene National de Sceaux/France, Festival d’Automne a Paris, CNDC Angers/France, Het Muziektheater/Amsterdam, The Holland Festival, Festival International Montpellier-Danse, Danceworks UK Ltd, International Cannes Danse Festival, and in the United States by San Francisco Performances, The Joyce Theater, UCSB Arts & Lectures, Spirit Square Center for the Arts, Wexner Center for the Arts, Walker Art Center, White Bird, and Carver Community Cultural Center.

In 2008 the Company completed a 9-city tour throughout the United Kingdom including performances in England: London, Sheffield, Cornwall, Bradford, Bromley and Northhampton; in Cardiff, Wales; and Inverness and Glagow, Scotland. Other recent overseas touring has included Belfast Festival at Queen’s (Belfast, N. Ireland), Biennale de Val du Marne (Villejuif, France), Galway Arts Festival (Galway, Ireland), Queer UpNorth Festival (Manchester, England), Venice Biennale and Bolzano Teatro Comunale, (Bolzano, Italy).

The Company completed their largest US tour to date in 2007, including return engagements to San Francisco Performances, UCLA Live!, New Art New Mexico, UC Santa Barbara, Alverno College, UMASS, World Music/Crash Arts, Walker Art Center and UC Santa Cruz. The Company also presented engagements at University Musical Society, Ann Arbor; John Michael Kohler Center, Sheboygan; The Egg, Albany; Seattle Theatre Group; White Bird in Portland, Oregon and Cornell University, Ithaca.

Stephen recently worked on an evening-length work for 30 dancers in collaboration with composer Ryan Lott aka SON LUX for Ballet-de-Lorraine. Titled Tragic/Love, it premiered in Montpellier, France in June 2009. In addition, Stephen has recently created new works for Scottish Ballet and Washington Ballet, among others. Company repertory has been recently set on Ballet-de-Lorraine, Ballet National de Marseille, Diversions Dance Company of Wales, London Contemporary Dance School, Dance Works Rotterdam, Barnard College, and Marymount Manhattan College in New York.

I Drink the Air Before Me, the centerpiece of SPC’s 25th Anniversary, premiered April 28, 2009 at the Joyce Theater in New York CIty and will tour throughout the country and overseas over the next two years. This Anniversary has precipitated new artistic and educational goals that include the pursuit of a permanent home to base the Company’s creative endeavors and educational programs, including a proposed Center for Collaborative Artists. The Company looks forward to the next 25 years with an eye to deepening the impact that the work has, widening the audiences they reach, and promoting dance in culture at large.
