The 2009 appointment of Rafael Bonachela as Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company has given birth to a new era in Australian contemporary dance. Rafael’s first commissioned work as a guest choreographer with the Company was 360° in 2008. Since that time he has premiered we unfold, his first work following his appointment as Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company.The Company was led from 1976 – 2007 by Artistic Director Graeme Murphy and Associate Director Janet Vernon. Following the tragic death of newly appointed Director Tanya Liedtke in 2007, Sydney Dance Company presented an immensely challenging and creative year with five premiere works over three seasons in Sydney. These five works, INUK2, 360°, Sid’s Waltzing Masquerade, Love Instalment and GO! by choreographers Meryl Tankard, Rafael Bonachela, Aszure Barton, Shaun Parker and Reed Luplau respectively, gave rise to memorable work and remarkable performances by all of our artists.
